Tuning & Calibration

Accurate playback for critical listening environments

Understanding the interaction between your speakers and your room is a valuable asset in a critical listening environment. Empirical Dynamics uses a specialized, calibrated omni-directional microphone to perform a series of diffuse-field & free-field measurements that can help determine the best means of calibration/tuning. These measurements also help assess whether your space needs additional acoustic treatment to achieve accurate playback and monitoring. Read below to find out about some of the measurements that Empirical Dynamics can perform.

Waterfall

The Waterfall graph shows a measurment similar to SPL/Frequency Response but with the added metric of time to illustrate decay. X-axis = frequency (Hz).  Y-axis = SPL (dB). Z-axis = Time (ms).

Group Delay

The Excess Group Delay graph helps identify regions of minimum phase. This measurement is especially useful when voicing speakers because it defines when EQ is a viable solution.

SPL

The SPL graph shows us frequency response. This measurement, paired with the data from Excess Group Delay is used when voicing your speakers.  X-axis = frequency (Hz).  Y-axis = SPL (dB)

Spectrogram

The Spectrogram is very similar to the Waterfall graph above. It effectively displays all of the same data but in a different format. X-axis = frequency (Hz).  Y-axis = Time (ms). Color gradient = SPL (dB).

RT60

RT60 measures the reverb time of a particular space. T30 & T20 are similar measurements that can be especially useful when there is unavoidable noise floor (HVAC, computer fans, etc.) that would render an RT60 inaccurate.

Clarity

C50[speech] & C80[music] graphs show a ratio of direct sound to reflected sound across a time span of 50ms and 80ms, respectively. D50 (Definition) is effectively the same but represented as % rather than a ratio.

Acoustic treatment

Empirical Dynamics works directly with Wood & Wire Works LLC to facilitate acoustic solutions. If it is determined that your room needs additional treatment, we can send over the data that has been collected so that Wood & Wire Works can design an effective and comprehensive custom solution for your critical listening environment.

Rates

Speaker Voicing & Calibration Rates are $50 per hour

Clients should generally allot:

 4 hours for Stereo rooms

8 hours for Surround/Immersive/Dolby Atmos rooms
